THE PHYLLIS CHAPMAN CHALLENGE 2006

start of the phyillis chapman challenge
At St Martins Church we put on our walking boots for a third consecutive year.
In 2006 wewill be raising money for disabled access projects within the church.
This trend for energetic fundraising
began in 2004 when a member of the congregation, Phyllis Chapman,
put a team of people together to attempt the ‘3 Peaks Challenge’.
Funds were urgently needed at this point to restore the church’s ailing spire.
Sadly, Phyllis died before the challenge was completed
but her memory lives on in an annual challenge.
Following the success of the ‘Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge’ in 2005,
St Martins will descend upon Yorkshire again
to undertake ‘The Minster Way’. This covers a 50 mile stretch
between the Minsters of Beverly and York.
The course is generally flat, passing through pleasant countryside
and picturesque Yorkshire villages along the route.
A 50 mile distance is a long way to cover in just one weekend so
organisers have modified the route slightly to
accommodate a walk, run and cycle in order to complete the challenge.

The challenge began on Friday 18th August when the walkers made the journey to Yorkshire.
We were based in a campsite just outside Pocklington, with some
members choosing to make use of B & B facilities near by.

On the following morning the walkers went to the start point at Beverly Minster and begin a 25 mile walk which took them over the fields to Millington. The walkers will be carrying their lunch, waterproofs and basic first aid kits but a support crew also met them at points along the route to top up with extra food and water and to offer a lift to anyone who needs it!

In the evening, after a long hot shower, we went to the Yorkway Motel for dinner (this is only 50 yards from the campsite but transport
will be available if required!)
On Sunday morning we went back over to Millington to be part of the
church service there. After the service the runners left from
the church to complete their 6 mile stretch.
The cyclists met them and continue along the course to
the outskirts of York.

In the last 2 years ‘The Phyllis Chapman Challenge’ has provided a
great opportunity to raise money for the church and has given us a
chance to have fellowship and fun together.
