| Friday June 6th, 2008. Doreen Estelle LEE-CHANNING. Aged 83, she was born in the Channel Islands, with a French mother and an English father. She met her husband Tony. when she was working in a café and he was a coach driver. They went off to Southampton to be married and had three children Michael, Nigel and David. Mr. Lee-Channing worked in the prison service and they moved around the country. In her early days, Doreen had both played and sang in public concerts and was described by her sons as a very gentle person; in part a reaction to her own mother, who was remembered as harsh. Latterly, Doreen’s health had declined considerably and her mobility was greatly restricted. They had recently come to live in Twycross, from which several neighbours attended the funeral, which was followed by a burial in the Desford Cemetery and refreshments in the Bulls Head. |
| Friday May 30th, 2008. The Revd. Peter Folks officiated at the funeral of Gwendolyn Margaret WARD, aged 89, of Cambridge Drive. She was born and grew up in Camarthenshire and went to school with her sister Mary and brother John. She moved to Manchester, where she met and married her husband Norman in 1937. Sadly, he died in 1958. She had been a widow for fifty years. She worked for John noble and then as a valuation officer, still in Manchester. She moved to Leicester, before returning to Wales, to care for her parents. After their deaths, she moved back into England and came to Desford. She was a keen gardener, specialising in African Violets. She shared her garden produce with others. She became disabled in the 1990s, but was an intelligent and independent person. She was a long-standing member of the Endeavour Club in Desford and many of her friends attended the funeral, where the newly-installed lift was much-used and appreciated. She leaves a son Alan, daughter-in-law Noreen, grandchildren Carol and huw and great-grandchildren Joseph, Kimberley, Katie, Hannah and Sam. |
| Thursday May 29th, 2008. The Revd. Peter Folks officiated at the funeral of Kenneth WALE, aged 69, of St. Martin’s Drive. Born in 1939 at Newbold Verdon, he was one of a family of eleven. After WW2, he served his national service in Germany. After his return, he worked in a rubber factory in Newbold Verdon, where he met his wife Carol. They were married in 1969. Sadly, she died in 1985. Mr. Wale then moved to Desford and worked for a timber fire proofing company in Market Bosworth. He went to work every day on his bicycle, until forced to retire because of ill-health. He and Carol had one daughter, now married to Jeffrey. There are two grandchildren Charlie-Ann and Joseph. |
| Disposal (Burial) of Cremated Remains. Thursday May 8th, 2008. Ben David HACKNEY, born asleep. |
Monday April 21st, 2008. John Maurice BURCHALL of Oak Road.
Known as Jack., he was 97. He came from Barlestone; one of a family of five, of which one younger sister Mona survives him. He married his late wife Harriett EDWARDS in 1936. She came from the cottages in Hunts Lane, Desford; then known as “the bungalows”. She died in 1981 and her death affected him very deeply. They had three children. St. Giles Church, Barlestone was Jack’s place of worship, where he was a regular worshipper, serving on the P.C.C. and in any practical way he could. His working life was at the Desford Pit, where he was a surface worker, in charge of the winding gear and where he was noted as a stickler for punctuality and for being a man of his word. His other great love was his garden, in which he worked tirelessly and from which he would give away its produce to family and neighbours, with characteristic generosity. When he could not sleep at night, he would get up and work at making jams and marmalade. He and his family moved to Oak Road when the houses were newly-built, in the 1960s, to a new steel-framed method of construction. He stayed there to the end of his life and, in latter years, could be seen riding his bicycle along the road, wearing his cap. Gardening and cycling kept him a fit man. Last year Jack. had a big operation and then picked up a water infection and then was found to be anaemic. His health then declined and he died on April 8th last, in his own home, as he would have wanted; surrounded and lamented by his close and supportive family. The hymns sung at the funeral were personal favourites; “Lead, Kindly light” and “Sweet is the work, my God and King”, to the tune “Deep Harmony”, which he and his wife Harriett would sing together as a duet. His cremated remains are buried in the Desford Churchyard, in the Garden of Remembrance and to which church he would come to worship at the early service of the Holy Communion. |
| Disposal (Burial) of Cremated Remains. Thursday April 10th, 2008. Dorothy Ellen TULLETT, of Asford, Kent, but formerly of Church Lane. Aged 87. |
| The Rector was invited to officiate at the Heart of England Crematorium, Nuneaton, on Friday March 14th, 2008, at the funeral service of Charles HANCOCK, late of Honeysuckle Farm, Newtown Unthank. Aged 90, he was a native of Bruntingthorpe, south Leicestershire. He had outlived his family. He formerly lived at the Glenfield Frith Hospital and, when it was closed, moved to Honeysuckle Farm, with three friends Mabel, Jim. and Barbara; the last two of whom survive him. He had a great love of and affinity with animals, both domestic pets and cows. He worked on a farm and looked forward to visits to the Melton Mowbray cattle market. He is survived by Honey, one of two cats at the farm. He enjoyed his pint and country and western music; being a Bob. Dylan fan. He was a reserved man. Latterly, he had attended the services held at the farm from the church. Fellow residents, church members and staff attended the service, which included the hymn “All things bright and beautiful” and two tracks of his favourite music. His cremated remains were interred under the big fir tree at the back of the farm. |
The Rector was invited to officiate on Friday January 4th, 2008 at the Gilroes Crematorium, Groby Road, Leicester, at the funeral of Patricia (Pat.) Ann REED, late of St. Martin’s Drive, Desford. Aged only 47, she was born Patricia Ann COWLING ON August 1st, 1960 in Southern Rhodesia, where her father was serving in the R.A.F. She was one of a family of three girls and two boys. When very young, she was struck with illness, which left her prone to ill-health throughout her life, but with which she learnt to live with courage and determination. She returned as a child to the U.K. and grew up in Blackburn, Lancashire. She married her husband Graham on April 6th, 1988. They have two children; Kenny, who gave a tribute to his mother during the service and Leanne, who read a poem and who sang in the Desford Church Choir. Pat. worked at the Caterpillar and also with Graham’s firm. Pat. collapsed at home, just before last Christmas and, despite efforts, could not be saved. The exact cause of death was not known when the funeral took place. This was attended by a large number of friends and family and included some lively dance music, which Pat. had enjoyed.
A gathering followed at the “Bulls Head” in Desford and cake, which she had baked, was distributed amongst those present. |
